The much awaited book ‘Westoe – A history of the Village and
its residents’ by Dorothy
Fleet has been published and is on sale at the Westoe Fair and the monthly meetings of
South Shields Local History Group. For more details visit www.southshieldslhg.org.uk
Westoe
Village’s history began over a thousand years ago and it remained a remote
rural
village
of farms and cottages for centuries.
Some two hundred years ago it gradually
became
the desired location for the families of successful local business men. By the
beginning
of the 19th century the Village was an influential community of relatives and
neighbours
who were often working together for the successful development of the town.
Dorothy’s
lavishly illustrated book tells the story of each of the houses and the
families
who
lived there over a period of two hundred years from the mid 1700’s. All proceeds from
the
sale of the book will go to South Shields Local History Group, so please come along to
the Westoe Fair on Saturday 22 June 11.00am - 4.00pm, where there will be a display of
images from the book.
South Shields Museum and Art Gallery in Ocean Road will be displaying a collection of
paintings of Westoe
Village to accompany the book. The
display will be in the Stairwell
Gallery from June
1st and throughout the summer months
